Firstly, very well done to all of you who came out to play on Wednesday in either the 18-hole or the 9-hole Stableford competitions.

It wasn’t cold but the air was heavy with mist, the skies remained grey, and the melting frosts had left some exciting, mud skating opportunities for those developing their skills in this new field sport! Plus, some had to play beat the groundsman on a couple of tees! (Another new field sport?!)

The greens varied in speed but were in good condition; and some of us may have benefited from the scrub and branch clearance in various places.

There were some good scores too considering the conditions and the time of year:

Div 1: Winner – Lesley Avent 32 points Runner Up – Sue Nugent 29 points

Div 2: Winner – Gaye Illsley 37 points Runner Up – Ropo Olaofe 36 points

9 hole: Winner – Carol Agass 16 points Runner Up – Shanta Balram 14 points

Congratulations to the winners!

There were no two’s yesterday.

Here is a photograph of the cleared area to the left of the 13th tee now; and, as I can’t resist our flora and fauna, one of a shelf or bracket fungus on the decking of our hut. (Happy to be corrected on my identification.)

If you have had difficulty signing up for the fun Foursomes next Wednesday, please contact Helen Savage. Teams will be drawn on Monday.

The week after, on 29 January, is another Stableford; and on February 5th, we have a fun Patsomes which is a combination of a Fourball, Greensomes and Foursomes. Never fear – all will be explained nearer the time! Just sign up for the draw when the time comes (after 8pm on January 23rd).

The Women’s Committee has just sent out an email showing the handicaps and divisions for the new playing season’s competitions starting in March. If you have any comments, please email our Secretary, Hazel Goodyear (contacthazel@hotmail.co.uk) by the end of January. Comments will be discussed at our February Committee meeting.

If you are wondering what to do on Friday evening, 17 January, come along to hear the Lucy Blu Country Music Duo at about 8pm. Live music for free! Made all the more enjoyable by either booking the fish supper beforehand or enjoying the wide range of drinks on offer at the Bar. Dry January followers well provided for!

Booking is now available for the Captains’ Charity Concert on Sunday, 2 March at 5pm. All proceeds go to the Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. Tickets are £15 for an evening of harp music. To hear a solo harp is a wonderful, lyrical experience. Come and lose yourselves in the music of Tchaikovsky, Puccini and Jerome Kern. The Bar will be open and bar meals available after.

Segueing from opportunities to improve your musical experiences to opportunities for improving your golf experiences…

…. Danny and Nicola will be running some more group lessons for the higher handicappers in the near future on Tuesdays. Dates coming soon.

Four more group golf lessons with Danny for the lower handicappers are available for booking now. £10 per person. Maximum of 10 per group. They will be on Mondays at 2 pm: February 3rd, February 17th, March 3rd and March 17th.
