On Wednesday, June 11th, we had the Grandmother’s Cup and Senior Grandmother’s Salver, alongside an Alternate Stableford. There were some amazing scores in!
The Alternate Stableford winners were:
Div 1 Janet Connor 34 points (beating Ros Margey on countback)
Div 2 Gwyneth Bennett 35 points (beating Liz Tolton on countback)
Div 3 Sally Minks 43 points
The winner of the Senior Grandmother’s Salver over 13 holes was Janet Beacham with 27 points.
The winner of the Grandmother’s Cup was Wendy Goodman with 42 points.
Lesley Avent got a hole in one on the first; and scored a magnificent 40 points, which with a handicap of 15 today was no mean feat!
Congratulations to you all! Some great scores! Well done!
This is a final reminder/warning: please enter your card in IG immediately after the competition then put your card in the box in the locker room. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
The first round of the Women’s Luther Smith was on Saturday, June 7th, being played at home. For some, it ended in torrential rain completely soaking them to the skin! Currently, Alex Towndrow is in lead position with 73 and all to play for in the second round on Saturday, June 14th at Enfield.
Also at Enfield was the annual Women’s Open on Thursday, June 5th and also a day of rain, rain, and more rain until the fairways were running with water. Our Club had three teams entered for this and two teams walked away with prizes. In fifth place were Janet Connor, Lucy Bidmead, Sharon Saunders, and Ruth Goulding with 79 points (best two scores of four). And in first place with 88 points were Louise Fickling, Helen Gilbert, Cela Selley, and me. The day was, as ever, really well organised with lots of delicious food at the halfway point and for the buffet after.
On Sunday, June 15th, it’s the George Low 4BBB for Divisions 1 and 2 only. Sign up is in pairs. Currently we have eight pairs and I know it’s Father’s Day but there is room on the timesheet for more entrants.
Then on June 18th, it’s the Club Captain’s Prize for Women, a Stableford, which is open to all divisions. There will be excellent prizes for the first four winners, and nearest the pin prizes on all par 3 holes, plus nearest the pin in 2 on the 4th, to be presented by Guy after the competition. This is a sign up for a draw. We will go off the 1st and 8th tees and groups of 3 will be drawn more or less in handicap order.
During the Club Captain’s week, please also come and support the fun, mixed four ball competition Midsummer Madness on Friday, June 20th. Just sign up and teams will be drawn. There’s a 9am shotgun start with lunch and prize giving after. £28.50 for two courses and prizes.
Then on June 25th, it is the Pro’s prize, which is also the June Stableford. This too is open to all Divisions; and there is an Alternate on Sunday June 22nd.
This takes us into July and on Wednesday, July 2nd is the July Stableford after my away trip to Whittlebury Hall. There is also a 9-hole competition that day; and alternate Stablefords on the Sundays of 22 and 29 June.
If you haven’t already, please sign up for the Club’s 130 Years Celebration on Friday, July 11th. We want this to be a bumper entry in our 130th year! Teams of four, with prizes and a meal after both the morning and afternoon competitions; plus, an evening disco. It’s open to all Divisions. You can bring a playing guest to add to your team. Danny will find you team members if needed.
Sign up for the Women’s Invitation to Women on Wednesday, August 6th opens this weekend. Please sign up as a four consisting of two members and two women guest players. It is open to all Divisions, but handicaps will be capped at 45. If you have difficulty finding guests to play with, please ask a member of the Women’s Committee in case they can help. It costs £50 a pair.
I hope you have noticed the wonderful photo collage of the Spring Meeting in the Locker room, created by Hazel. Some lovely photos and memories - many thanks, Hazel!
Just a quick plug for my daughter, Alex, who is doing the London to Brighton bike ride sponsored by her company, Miki, for the British Heart Foundation (another wonderful charity). If you want to support her, please click on her WhatsApp photo and it gives you the direct link to donate to her website. Thank you.
As two of today’s competitions focused on Grandmother’s, I thought that this quote was quite a nice one to end with: ‘Age is no barrier. It’s a limitation you put on your mind.’ It comes from the American former heptathlete, Jackie Joyner-Kersee
Happy June golfing! Jeux sans frontieres!
