On Wednesday, 4 June, it was our Centenary Salver, a trophy presented by Monica Gibbon to celebrate the Centenary of the Club in 1995; and it was also the June Medal. This was the 30th presentation and there were many at our lunch who had won it before, including Pauline Platt who was the first winner and also the winner a few years ago. Pauline spoke briefly about the history of the trophy and its importance in the competition hierarchy. Then Una Kilgallon, last year’s winner, presented the trophy to the this year’s winner, Ozlem Orgen

Lucy was the only person to get a 2 today. And in the 9 hole competition, Beryl Bottoms came first with 17 points in a field of 5.
Many congratulations to Ozlem and to all today’s winners.
The Centenary meal of chicken skewers with rice and slaw was delicious. Thank you to all those who helped to make the day: Debbie and Roy for the organisation and catering: Sonia and Sandra for the wonderful service; Sharon and Umar for the lovely flowers; Sue E, Ozlem, Sue N, Jane and Nikki for the superb cakes; and Helen Savage for sorting out all the winners and prizes.
The course was playing well, although the dry ground is still creating some wild bounces. A little rain fell but not enough to put the umbrella up. The wildlife at the lake on the 17th was distracting as the Canada Geese babies were looking very cute; and on the 18th tee, there were tiny baby frogs trying to avoid our feet.
On Friday, 30 May on a lovely, late Spring afternoon, 17 players risked the new competition, over 13 holes +, called the Wrinklies ( not a name chosen by me but humorous enough to retain!). Adding age to handicap then taking 13/18ths, it was played like the Flag, shots being deducted for each hole until they had all gone. I made it to the 14th in the left hand bunker but the first prize was awarded to Janet Beacham who also made it to the 14th. Liz Tolton and Kathleen Hall tied for second place. Face mask packs were distributed to all participants to help with the ‘wrinklies’! Well done everyone and thank you for entering!
The first round of the Luther Smith is this Saturday, 7 June, being played at home. Good luck to the intrepid 6 representing the Women’s Section!
Next Wednesday on 11 June, it’s the Grandmothers’ Cup and Senior Grandmothers’ Salver with an Alternate Stableford. The Senior Grandmothers’ Cup is over 13 holes and to be eligible you have to be aged 75+.
There is a Sunday Alternate for the above; and a 9 hole comp after the main Wednesday comp.
On Sunday, 15 June, it’s the George Low 4BBB for Divisions 1 and 2 only. Sign up is in pairs.
And on 18 June, it’s the Club Captain’s Prize for Women, a Stableford which is open to all divisions. There will be prizes for the first four winners and nearest the pin prizes on all par 3 holes to be presented by Guy after the competition. This is a sign up for a draw.
Then on 25 June, it is the Pro’s prize , which is also the June Stableford. This too is open to all Divisions; and there is an Alternate on Sunday 22 June.
If you are partial to a little line dancing, then please book and come along this Saturday evening from 8 to 10pm. We need some more golfers to participate. It should be good fun.
See this rather battered ball celebrating the Club’s 125 years in 2020 when Sue Evans was Captain?! Well, it was found recently by a friend who is a member at Enfield Golf Club and had played recently ……at Stoke by Nayland! One of us must have lost it there on our Away trip in 2023 and it’s been lurking there all this time. An old (in the life of a golf ball) and much travelled ball!
If you haven’t already, please sign up for the Club’s 130 Years Celebration on Friday, 11 July. Teams of 4, with prizes and a meal after both the morning and afternoon competitions; plus an evening disco. It’s open to all Divisions. Not to be missed! Play your part in the Club’s history!
Jordan Spieth, the American professional golfer, said, some time before he reached number one in the Official World Ranking : ‘I’ve told myself that I have a chance to make history, and that’s my focus’. I know we can’t all play like Jordan Spieth but we can make our own personal histories - for ourselves and in the Club.
