After almost a solid day’s rain the day before, it was delightful to wake on Wednesday to blue skies. The course had clearly needed the rain and there were a few squishy bits but it was good to play even though the bounces weren’t quite so high nor the runs as long as we have enjoyed over the last few weeks!
There were 18 pairs contending for the Coronation Foursomes. The winners with 38 points were Jane Majer and Ozlem Orgen, followed by Ruth Goulding and Sharon Saunders with 36 points.
Then 3 pairs had 35 points: Louise and Helen S; Nikki and Janet C; Angela Graham and Alison T (in that order).
Well done to all the winners! The winning pair will go forward for possible qualification for the regional final.
There were 8 playing in the 9 hole competition. The winner with 15 points was Frances Chapman, closely followed by Pauline Platt with 14 points. Well done!
I am pleased to see that this comp is growing and becoming more competitive.
Our 5 a side team had a great win at North Middlesex on Sunday: 3-2 with some very close matches going to the 18th. Congratulations to Nikki C, Helen G, Lisa, Cela and their captain, Lucy.
Some of us will be playing in the Academy roll- up for 7 holes on Thursday, 29 May. This is a good opportunity for Academy Year 2 members to practice their newly learned skills over 7 holes and to get to know playing members. The session after is on Thursday, 3 July.
On Friday, I am trying a new competition known as the Wrinklies, played like a Flag comp, where you have a handicap based on your age plus handicap. I’ve opted for 13 holes so participants get a 13/18ths handicap. I had hoped to have a larger field but we have 16 competing so thanks for signing up. Your prepared card will be in the Locker room. Enjoy it!
And thus, May will come to an end and we go straight into June!
Next Wednesday, 4 June is the Centenary Salver and Alternate Medal , with a lunch after, followed by presentation of the trophy. Please sign up for the meal by Friday, 30 May and let Debbie know if you want an alternative to the pre-ordered chicken skewers.
Then on 11 June, it’s the Grandmothers’ Cup and Senior Grandmothers’ Salver with an Alternate Stableford. The Senior Grandmothers’ Cup is over 13 holes and to be eligible you have to be aged 75+.
There are Sunday Alternates for both of the above; and 9 hole comps after the main Wednesday comps.
On Sunday, 15 June, it’s the George Low 4BBB for Divisions 1 and 2 only. Sign up is in pairs.
And on 18 June, it’s the Club Captain’s Prize for Women, a Stableford which is open to all divisions.
The first round of the Luther Smith is being played at BHP on Saturday, 7 June; and the second round at Enfield on Saturday, 14 June. We have 6 of our top women players participating so let’s hope we can keep the Women’s title.
A big thank you to our pot planters, Sharon and Umar – the pots are looking lovely on the steps, by the first tee and the hut; and to Lesley and Tracey, who are about to tackle the beds near the Pro shop and the back bed. Just a reminder that the Club does not currently have a gardener and is reliant on volunteers to keep our flower beds and pots at the Club looking nice. We particularly need someone to tidy up the bed by the 15th tee, ideally before June 7th when Enfield visit for our first Luther Smith match. If you feel you can help, please let me know. Thank you.
I wanted to end this blog with a relevant quote but couldn’t find one which went with ‘Coronation’ as golf is not particularly either loved or played by the royal family, apart from Prince Andrew…..so I looked for ‘Foursomes’ and thought you might like this one from the American comedian Bob Hope about playing with the President of the USA. ‘Whenever I play with him, I usually try to make it a foursome – the President, myself, a paramedic and a faith healer’! He was probably referring to President Gerald Ford, a somewhat wayward golfer, but I think it could apply to playing with Trump…..!
