This Wednesday was the marathon 36-hole Victory Cup medal, coupled with the 18-hole May medal. We had expected rain and possibly thunder and lightning but Bush Hill Park Golf Club was spared. After a little early drizzle, the weather was fine with the sun appearing in the afternoon.

Here are the winners:

A number of people scored two’s:  Anneka Vestey, Gwyneth Bennett, Tracy Concadoro, Angela Graham, Lisa Martin (x2), Nikki, and Helen Gilbert.

Well done to all winners, particularly those who managed the 36 holes for the Victory Cup! Totally unimpressed by our efforts, ignoring passing balls and players, were our Canada Geese with gosling!

I forgot to mention at something in my last week’s blog! There were two who scored a two in the Ping 4BBB, Sue Nugent on the 1st and Angela Graham on the 16th. Apologies for omitting that information and well done!

We had the Mixed Maytime Greensomes on Sunday, May 18th.  A good turnout and some impressive scores with Chris and Paul Robertson, a very successful mother and son combination, winning with a wonderful 47 points! An early celebration for Chris’s birthday the next day! Second with 44 points were Carol and Andy Dodd. Well done to the winners and all who played including those who do not qualify but enjoy the challenge. It was not a good day for Guy and me, so we nobly took the last position!

Next week, we have the Coronation Foursomes on Wednesday.

Then on Friday, May 30th, we have The Wrinklies competition over 13 holes +, for the over 60’s. I should like to see some more signing up for this. Over half the membership is over 60…  Just a reminder that this is for all Divisions. You start with your handicap plus your age and play out each hole until you have used up all your shots. The player who gets the furthest before using up all her shots is the winner. It’s a fun format. Please stay after all have finished if you can for a mini prize-giving – and do order fish and chips if you’d like to stay for a sociable chat over a meal.

On June 4th, we have the Centenary Salver with a meal after. The sign-up list for the meal is in the Locker Room.

On June 11th, it’s the Grandmothers’ and Senior Grandmothers’ competitions with an Alternate Stableford.

There is advance notice on the board in the Locker room with information about the Women’s Invitation to Women from other Clubs on Wednesday, August 6th.

On Friday, May 16th, we had the Nightingale Night Hike, starting from the Civic Centre, with BHPGC setting up and manning the water station at the foot of Bush Hill. Thanks to Umar, Hazel, Guy, Ross, and Hannah for helping with this and encouraging the walkers as they passed. An impressive number of Golf Club members participated, joining well over 1,200 walkers: Sue and Kris A, Lucy, Sharon, Liz, Alex, Emma, Nikki, Jan, Anne H, Angela G, Sally M, Val, Paula and me. It was a lovely evening, turning quite chilly as time went by. Ideal for a brisk walk! Most walked 15k and some of us 10k. Well done and thank you all for participating!  Many paid their sponsorship directly to Nightingale but we had £205 donated via our JustGiving page. A great evening for The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre!

Good luck to the 5-a-side team playing away to North Middlesex on Sunday, May 25th!

While looking for a quote today, I came across this one from Harry Vardon who was a professional golfer from Jersey. He won the British Open six times and helped design golf courses. He was the Club Pro at South Herts until he died in 1937, aged 66. He said, ‘Don’t play too much golf.  Two rounds a day are plenty.’  !!

Keep enjoying dry golfing while you can – but maybe not always two rounds a day!
