Annoyingly, heavy rain stopped the medal competition on Wednesday. Greens were flooded, bunkers became paddling pools, and puddles dotted the fairways. Two brave souls had set off but were persuaded to return. Then when the rain had eased up, several went out to play a round or at least a few holes. The geese were out in force enjoying the wet conditions and made the most of the puddles and bunkers.

The foxes were not to be left out of the fun. After keeping a low profile recently, they were in evidence in various places, including the 15th hole where one helped himself to Louise’s ball – not just once but twice!

The ball can be spotted behind the fox on the right of the photo!

So, no human winners to report on for the April Medal!

But my apologies for not mentioning those who got a two last week on April 16th: Ruth, Lisa and Helen Savage. Congratulations!

Don’t forget Mixed Social Golf on Friday, April 25th in the afternoon from 3pm. Thirteen holes. If you can’t play, come for the Italian Night with Raffa and Claudio.

There is more Mixed Social Golf once a month on Thursday afternoons, starting on May 15th. Sign up available now.

Next week on Wednesday, April 30th, we have a trio of competitions being played at the same time: the Bushguarders Cup, for Divisions 1 and 2; the May Stableford , for Divisions 1, 2 and 3; and Unleash Your Drive, for all 4 divisions. That week’s £5 entry fee goes to the Golf Foundation who are working to change lives through golf.

On Monday, May 5th, it’s the Club Captain’s Charity Day when we raise funds for our Charity this year, The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. It’s £48.50 per person including a breakfast roll, cold buffet lunch, and prizes. There will also be an auction. Sign up in teams of four: men’s, mixed or women’s. Shotgun start from 9am.

Then the following Wednesday, May 7th, we have our Spring Meeting with a morning medal competition for Divisions 1 and 2 played in pairs; and an afternoon competition over 9 holes (2 to 10) played in teams of 4, best 2 Stableford scores to count. The afternoon competition is open to Division 3.

After the Spring meeting, we have a two-course meal - salmon followed by apple and rhubarb crumble, tea/coffee for £23.95 - and a prize giving. All past and present playing members are welcome to come to the meal. Please sign up on the list in the Locker Room by Friday, May 2nd.

On May 14th, we have the Ping 4 Ball Better Ball competition. Sign up is in pairs. There is also a Sunday competition for this, as long as you have a four who can play.

A couple of golf reminders:

Please give any General Play cards you do directly to the Pro shop. They may get muddled up if put in the comps box in the Locker room.

For weekly competitions, please put your card in the box in the locker room as soon as you have entered your score on IG. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.

We have many important dates coming up but here are two for your diary:

Friday, July 11th - 130 Years Celebration: a golf competition during the day and a disco at night. More information available soon.

Wednesday, August 6th – Women’s Invitation Day to Women from other Clubs: shotgun start, each player can invite one guest, teams of 4 with best 2 scores to count. Open to all handicaps but they will be capped at 45. Lunch after.

There are still a few places on the King's Cross Walk on Monday, April 28th, led by Polly Schlesinger from the C20 Society. Tickets are £18 and all the money goes to The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre. We will be meeting at the Black Sheep Coffee kiosk at the front of Kings Cross station at 11:15am.  The walk will take about 1.5 hours.

It is thought that Shakespeare was born and died on St George’s Day, which was April 23rd  (yesterday!). Shakespeare has something quotable to say about most things – even today’s weather! This is from Antony and Cleopatra, Act 5:

‘Dissolve, thick cloud, and rain, that I may say
The gods themselves do weep!’

The gods certainly had a little weep, very inconveniently, on St George’s Day! Enjoy your golfing whatever the weather!
