Many congratulations to Lisa Martin and Tracey Ripsher on winning the Australian Spoons competition this Wednesday with a score of 36! Great result! Their names will be put forward and hopefully their score will qualify them for the regional finals in July.
We had a field of 18 pairs, and several scored over 30 points, with four pairs tailing Lisa and Tracey, each with 35 points.
There were six playing in the 9 -hole Stableford. First with 17 points was Beryl Bottoms, closely followed by Pauline Platt, also with 17 points. Well done!
It was an unexpectedly, bitterly cold morning with most of us needing to wear woolly hats for the whole round to try and keep the cold out. The greens were still rather lumpy in places, adding extra excitement, and annoyance, to putting. The blossoming trees are looking magnificent with cherry, hawthorn, and pear all in full bloom, adding colour to the course. And our Egyptian goslings are growing!
Next Wednesday, April 16th is the Veteran’s Cup for those over 65 and an Alternate Stableford; then on April 23rd, we have the April Medal. There are Sunday competitions for both; and 9-hole Stablefords on both Wednesdays.
Notices have gone up in the Locker Room about the Spring meeting on May 7th, including a sheet on which to sign up for the meal after. We are trying to organise this competition via IG, with sign up from 8pm on April 23rd, but if it all goes weird, please be patient. It will get sorted. All past and present members are welcome to come to the meal even if they are not playing. We will be presenting prizes for recent competitions at that event, as well as the Spring Meeting prizes.
The Pearson team lost to Sudbury on home ground on Monday, 3/2; and play their last match of the season next Monday away to Ealing. We wish them all the best in their final match.
The new Academy women got off to a good start last Friday and Saturday with their introductory lesson with Nicola. There’s a lot of enthusiasm and, I am sure, potential talent.
We have started a Buddy scheme, pairing up a more experienced golfer with a new Academy or Academy Year 2 member. We hope this will prove successful in helping new players to learn more about the Club and the etiquette, and to support their integration.
The Men’s Academy kicks off on Wednesday, 16th April at 1pm and on Saturday, 19th at 2pm.
The men also have buddies and we will be having some mixed Academy competitions in the not-too-distant future.
There are still a few places on the Kings Cross Walk, led by Polly Schlesinger from the C20 Society, on Monday, April 28th in the morning. Tickets are £18 and the money goes to the Captain’s Charity, The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre.
The Charity’s Night Hike is on Friday, May 16th. There is still time to sign up with them directly to take part in raising more funds for the Charity. Thank you to those who already have. The photoshoot has been rearranged for Wednesday, April 16th about 2 pm.
This weekend is The Masters in Augusta. For many, the favourite to win is Scottie Scheffler (I wonder if he is a bridge player as well as a golfer?!) so he gets the last words this week: ‘People do not often control their circumstances, but they are given them anyway. It’s more about what is done with the hand that’s dealt than the actual hand itself and that is a fantastic reminder for everyone.’
Happy Spring golfing!
