It was a perfect Spring Day with bright blue sky, warmth in the sun, a few fluffy clouds, hardly any wind and much drier conditions underfoot. Twenty-nine entrants hotly contested the Bisque Salver on Wednesday - a competition requiring strategy, and a certain amount of mental agility keeping the scoring!
The results were:
1st Liz Tolton (50) with +9
2nd Alison Towndrow (30) with +8
3rd Ozlem Orgen (33) with +7
Well done, Liz! And all those with a plus result.
There were three two’s today from Lucy, Mary and myself.
By the lake on the 13th, we saw our first family of Egyptian goslings this Spring – five little fluff balls! The protective parents made it difficult to get a close-up photo.
A few reminders please:
Competition cards need to be entered on IG, put in the box, and checked by Helen before a competition can be finalised so, please ensure you do your part as soon as you come in from your round.
Please check that you are completing cards correctly. There is a guide on the website for New Women Golfers, which includes details of how to complete cards. Please read it to refresh your memory.
(A considerable percentage of cards are NOT completed correctly. You need to be aware that this can result in disqualification.)
All those completing general play cards to be submitted for handicap should show, as well as the score on each hole, the total score (not Stableford points).
When playing a competition like the Bisque, it is best to show a decreasing running total on the card as per Helen’s instruction by email on Monday. This showed very clearly how the card should have been completed.
And a housekeeping type reminder: Wednesdays are now much busier than they have ever been, with many people coming for lunch in addition to us when we come off the course. The bar staff work really hard to keep up with requests and orders but, sometimes, when they are dealing with a large number of orders, there will be a slight delay so please be patient.
There is still time to enter the internal knockout competitions. We need a few more players to make these challenging and competitive events. In particular, all those ladies with handicaps of over 43.6 in Division 3 who expressed an interest in the Summer comps, please sign up on IG for the Copper Scratch. I will organise a knockout Foursomes comp for you as well.
We have the last week of the ladder coming up and there is everything to play for to reach the top! The last day that a challenge can be issued is Sunday, March 30th, with the final matches played on Monday, March 31st. If you are challenged and are not free to play this coming week, please remove your name so that others are not prevented from climbing the ladder. Thank you.
On Friday, we have our Captain vs Vice comp over 13 holes taking place with lunch after. Tea and coffee and biscuits will be available in the entrance hall from 7:45am and the first tee times are from 8:30am. The timesheet is now available showing your team and playing partner and your tee. Cards will be ready to pick up on Friday morning. Handicaps are capped at 45.
Next Wednesday, on March 26th we have our last March competition which is a medal.
The Wednesday after, April 2nd, will be the April Stableford and the Golf Foundation’s ‘Make Your Mark’ competition. Our fees for this competition go to support the Golf Foundation’s charity work to ‘help golf clubs grow their junior influence, help to deliver golf into primary and secondary schools, and work with impoverished communities and areas to help make a real impact, using golf to help mental wellbeing.’
On Wednesday, April 9th, it’s the Australian Spoons, a Foursomes Stableford competition played off 50% of the pair’s combined course handicaps. Sign up on IG will be in pairs.
There are alternate Sunday competitions for two of the above (but not the Australian Spoons); and there will be 9-hole Stablefords each Wednesday.
And don’t forget the next Mixed Social Golf event on Friday, March 28th! Please sign up and play in this fun 13-hole competition.
There are still tickets available for the Kings Cross Walk led by Polly Schlesinger on Monday, April 28th. If you are signed up and wish to invite a friend, please purchase another ticket as we would like to sell all 25 tickets if possible. Each £18 ticket sale goes to support the Captain’s Charity, The Nightingale Cancer Support Centre.
It seems appropriate to end this week’s blog with a quote from the wonderful Rory McIlroy who won his second Players Championship title after beating J J Spaun earlier this week in a three-hole playoff at TPC Sawgrass: ‘The next time I cry about golf it will only be with joy. It's not worth crying over golf for any other reason. After all, it's only a game.’
Joyful Golfing!
