Last Friday, we had the Club’s Prize Giving Evening. Out came all the polished (!?) silver trophies for (temporary) presentation to all the competition winners for 2024. The winner of the prestigious Women’s John Shaw trophy for 2024 was Tracey Ripsher who had had a play off for the trophy with Helen Gilbert. Neither knew the final outcome until the announcement on Friday! There will be a full list and photographs in the next Bush Telegraph. Lucy and Jon Copley did a superb job handing out the prizes, ably assisted by Hazel, Guy, and me with input also from Handicap Secretaries, past and present, Helen Savage and Lisa Martin.

Wednesday’s Yellow Ball competition was played in the most glorious Autumn weather with thirty-seven participants. Taking into consideration that the yellow ball player doubled her Stableford score, there were still some great scores in. Here are the top 4 teams:

1st  Lucy Bidmead, Ozlem Orgen, Kate Malleson    98

2nd Louise Fickling, Helen Savage, Carole Wallis, Beryl Bottoms   96

3rd Ruth Goulding, Sue Agapiou, Carol Dodd   94

4th Sharon Saunders, Una Kilgallon, Christina Mann   93

Great results! I think in a number of teams, the yellow ball led a chequered life over 18 holes but some returned with the same yellow ball intact. Bravo!

Also well done to the only two who scored a two today: Sharon Saunders and Sue Nugent.

We were frequently supervised by the wildlife today: Canada and Egyptian geese, gulls, heron, parakeets, and those mischievous foxes – stealing food from golf bags…. and keys! (For the key story, speak to Jane, Carol A, or Lisa!)

(With thanks to Lucy for the Egyptian goose)

The Pearson match this week against Ealing at home was very closely contested with our side just losing 2-3. Lisa’s match went to the 21st hole! Well played, and commiserations for Helen Gilbert, Nikki Chodurek, Sharon Saunders, Lisa Martin, and Sue Nugent!

Next week’s Women’s Section competition on Wednesday, November 20th is a qualifying Stableford. Sign up on IG, playing in threes. There will also be a 9-hole Stableford competition.

The week after on Wednesday, November 27th is our End of Season Alliance. Please sign up and there will be a draw on Monday, 25th for teams of three, best two Stableford scores to count. Let’s hope that the weather is still holding!

There will be a meal after. Please sign up on the list in the locker room ticking your preference for either shepherd’s pie or fish pie by Monday, November 25th.

Don’t forget the Christmas Fayre on November 28th, the day after our End of Season Alliance. We still need bottles for the bottle tombola, toiletries and gifts for the raffle, and jams and preserves for the home produce stall. These go in the black boxes in the locker room.

Will you be able to make a cake or biscuits for the home produce stall? Home-made cakes are always very popular. If so, please let Hazel or me know. Thank you.

Please bring your friends and family to this event. We have many interesting stalls selling ideal gifts for Christmas. Entry is just £1 per person.

If you are a parent or grandparent of children between three and ten years old, there are still a few places available for the Kids' Christmas Party on December 7th, from 2pm to 4pm. There will be a chance to see Santa, enjoy games and music, and a party buffet.

One more date for your diary:  Thursday, December 5th in the evening, 7 for 7:30 pm. It’s our Women’s Section Christmas meal. A fun evening – not to be missed! The menu is on the noticeboard. Please sign up on the list, ticking the main course you would like.

Nag of the week:  please repair pitch marks on the greens. The ground at the moment is soft and easily dented by a high, pitched ball. Please think of those coming on to the green after you and repair your own marks and any others you might see. Thank you.

I am sure that many of you will empathise with this short, and bittersweet quote of the week from Tommy Bolt: “The mind messes up more shots than the body.”

(Tommy Bolt was an American professional golfer who won 15 PGA Tour titles, including the US Open in 1958)

Have a good golfing week!
