Wednesday's medal competition was played under grey skies with a chilly, damp heaviness in the air and a scent of Autumnal mown grass, but there was no wind, and the course was in good condition. We had 29 entrants including our Sunday players.

The winners in Division 1 were Louise Fickling with 72, and Ros Margey with 74; and in Division 2, Margaret Herlihy with 74 and Helen Savage with 75. Shanta Balram just missed out on countback.

Well played! No more medals now until February 23/26 next year!

The winner of today’s 9-hole Stableford with 24 points was Gaye Illsley. Good score, Gaye!

Sorry – a little nag now! I am aware (and see for myself) that many competition cards are not being accurately filled in. Incorrectly completed cards are difficult to check and lead to delays in confirming winners and publishing competition results. There are full details in the New Women’s Playing Guide and in the locker room about how to complete your card for Medals and Stablefords. Please look at these again (link below). If mistakes or omissions continue, we will be disqualifying people from the day’s competition.

A Guide for New Women Golfers 2024

Our Pearson Team had a second amazing win in their away match against Sudbury on Monday, 4 November. Well done to Lesley A, Lisa, Umar, Sue N and Sarah R on winning 4 – 1!  Great result!

Next week on Wednesday, November 13th, we have a Fun competition: the Yellow Ball!  Teams of three to be drawn on Monday, November 11th.  Best two Stableford scores to count. 85% handicap.  (Please note that all those with a 54 handicap will be capped for all fun competitions)

The week after on November 20th is a Stableford.

Then on Wednesday, November 27th we have our End of Season Alliance. The IG sign up for this is already open. Teams of three will be drawn on the Monday before. Best two Stableford scores to count. There is a sign-up sheet for the lunch after in the locker room. If you don’t want to play, you are welcome to come just to the lunch.  That afternoon, we will be presenting prizes for the competitions of the first few weeks of my Captaincy, so I hope to see you all there.

Over the weekend, the Club held a very successful fireworks evening. It was lovely to see members, with their children and grandchildren, waving sparklers at the back of the seventh green as all watched a wonderful firework display in the Town Park. Plenty of colour, loud noises, stars and sprays, whooshes and whizzes! Even the babies enjoyed the spectacle! Then back to the Club House for burgers and hot dogs.

Please note that our Women’s Christmas meal is on Thursday, December 5th in the evening, 7 for 7:30pm. Details will soon be on the noticeboard in the locker room.

But before then is our Christmas Fayre on Thursday, November 28th. We will be selling raffle tickets at £5 a strip so please bring in cash over the next three weeks to buy your raffle tickets. Great prizes – too good to miss! All proceeds from the raffle go towards the Captains’ Charity, the Nightingale Cancer Support Centre.

We still need bottles for the bottle stall; jams and preserves for the home produce stall; and toiletries and food for the hampers. Please put your offerings in the black boxes in the locker room. Thank you for your support.

Here’s an interesting fact: Did you know that Trump spent well over 20% of his first Presidency playing golf? Hmm!

As I cannot find any memorable Trump golf quotes, (unless you count ‘Owning a great golf course gives you great power’!), I will give the last word this week to Arnold Palmer - an American professional golfer who helped change the perception of golf from an elite, upper-class pastime of private clubs to a more inclusive sport accessible to a wider range of people via public courses: ‘Success in golf depends less on strength of body, more on strength of mind and character’.

Happy Autumn Golfing!
